Trichloroethylene is a colorless, slightly poisonous, volatile liquid made of organic halogen compounds.
Since it is not flammable under normal conditions, it is used as a solvent in dry cleaning processes, degreasing metal materials, extracting caffeine from coffee, oil and wax from cotton and wool.
Trichloroethylene has been used as an adhesive for materials made of polystyrene, especially for model toys. Its vapor creates euphoria in people, but can become habit-forming if inhaled continuously.
It is mostly used in the production of tetrachloroethylene in industry. For this, trichloroethylene is first converted to pentachloroethane by reaction with chlorine, and then by reaction of pentachloroethane with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide or by heating in the presence of a catalyst, rechloroethylene is formed.
